Of zou inmiddels het zittende gouvernement Obama ook al om ge kocht zijn. Ik ontving onderstaande email:
How on earth does a new oil spill in the Gulf make now a good time to approve 6 new deepwater drilling permits?!
Tell Interior Secretary Salazar and BOEMRE Director Bromwich to stop giving new Gulf drilling permits out like candy!
Early last week, a new oil spill was spotted in the Gulf of Mexico.1 The slick is miles long and damaging some of the worst-hit areas of the BP oil spill disaster.
But instead of taking this as confirmation that offshore drilling continues to threaten this recovering ecosystem, the Department of the Interior has approved six new deepwater drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico in the past few weeks2 – the first deepwater permits issued since the BP spill.
We would prefer to learn from our mistakes – not repeat them!
Ask Interior Secretary Salazar to revoke these new drilling permits and put a hold on all proposed permits in the Gulf.
Following the BP oil spill, drilling in the Gulf was suspended. But now, even though this part of the ocean is still devastated by last year’s spill and trying to cope with this most recent, new slick, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) has been quietly approving permits to resume drilling left and right! It’s even approving new permits that will allow companies to explore untouched areas near the Louisiana coast!
One permit approved last week would allow Chevron to open up three wells in a pristine area of the ocean floor.
Though the permit was approved because Chevron supposedly met the new, stricter safety standards, the recent evidence of a new oil spill in the region makes it obvious that not enough has been done to prevent accidents at current oil wells in the Gulf.
Make sure the Department of Interior gets the message that no new drilling permits should be approved. Contact Interior Secretary Salazar and BOEMRE Director Bromwich before they give any more companies the go-ahead to drill in the long-suffering Gulf of Mexico.
Then please spread the word to your family, friends and neighbors and ask them to do the same.
Thanks for your help and support.
